I've been unwell at a particularly busy time of the year, and given how time- and energy-intensive articles are to create and how much time I lost, I needed a break while I caught up with customer work. The last article I wrote was about the lovely Plinius Model 10 amplifiers, so what better way to ease back in than with an article about another Model 10 - the stunning SME Model 10 turntable! - [Rare Plinius Model 10 Amplifiers Restored!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/plinius-model-10-amplifiers-restored/): Welcome back, folks, and I hope you are doing well! I always planned on writing this article about this pair of absolutely stunning Plinius Model 10 power amplifiers, back in 2019 when I completed the work, but you know how it is: you're busy, you keep working, and eventually you forget to do some of the things you wanted to do. - [Resurrecting An Amazing Audiolab 8000A](https://liquidaudio.com.au/ressurecting-an-amazing-audiolab-8000a/): I'd first like to thank Steven for generously donating this old beauty, and a couple of other pieces, rather than sending them to recycling, as usually happens when they get to this point. This article is dedicated to Steven and others who've kindly and environmentally thoughtfully donated pieces like this Audiolab 8000A rather than scrapping them. - [Lovely VPI HW-19 Mark 3 Turntable Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/lovely-vpi-hw-19-mark-3-turntable-repair/): Welcome back to a shorter article today about this VPI HW-19 Mark 3 / SME IV tonearm combo. I promised the owner I would write this one up, and as it's only from December 2025, it's still fairly fresh in my mind. The destroyed receiver article is coming, BTW. We are just waiting for the resolution to come on that one. - [The Worst Bodgery We’ve Seen is Coming…](https://liquidaudio.com.au/the-worst-bodgery-weve-seen-is-coming/): You simply will not believe what we found inside this otherwise gorgeous, recently sold vintage receiver. What make and model? Where was it purchased from? How much was it and who sold it? You'll have to stay tuned for that! - [Beautiful Pioneer SA-8800 II Amplifier Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/beautiful-pioneer-sa-8800-ii-amplifier-repair/): I should preface this article by noting that I've probably repaired a couple of dozen Pioneer SA-8xxx and SA-9xxx amplifiers over the last couple of years, including this stunning Pioneer SA-8900 II, and this SA-9800. The problem for me is that after a month or two, they are gone from my mind. The easiest stories to write are always the ones I've just finished, so with that in mind, let's dive into my repair of this gorgeous Pioneer SA-8800 II. - [Stunning Yamaha GT-2000L Turntable Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/stunning-yamaha-gt-2000l-turntable-service/): OK, so what is a Yamaha GT-2000L, I hear you ask. Well, it's a regular near-30kg Yamaha GT-2000 direct drive turntable, a favourite I've written about many times, but with a light (maybe oak) real-wood veneer, as opposed to the classic black veneers we so commonly see from Japan, and Yamaha in particular. It also has a redesigned power supply, more on that later. - [Stunning Esoteric P-2 CD Transport Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/stunning-esoteric-p-2-cd-transport-repair/): Welcome back, everyone. My apologies for the delay in new articles, but I've been managing my energy and trying to stay ahead of the curve! I'm staying focused, getting through a ton of work and limiting the jobs I book. One of those is this absolutely beautiful, though somewhat challenging to work on, Esoteric P-2 CD transport, from one of CD's golden years - 1992. - [Major Workshop Tidy-Ups!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/major-workshop-tidy-ups/): I've been busy doing major workshop tidy-ups, specifically the main workshop #2, and my original, internal workshop #1, which had been offline for several years, due to the need for a major tidy-up. - [2025 Recap, Merry Christmas & Happy Holiday!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/2025-recap-merry-christmas-happy-holiday/): Welcome to my 2025 recap. Yes, it's that time of year again, no, I can't believe it, and you'd better believe that Liquid Audio will close for a much-needed break over the festive season! If you have enquiries, best to leave them until we reopen. - [Stunning Sansui BA-5000 Deep Dive Video](https://liquidaudio.com.au/stunning-sansui-ba-5000-deep-dive-video/): Buoyed by the success of my Technics SE-A100 video, which now has over 22,000 views and a 98% positive rating, and needing a break from the two-day grind of producing huge articles, I decided to release another longer-form video you might enjoy. I've just published a deep-dive video about the incredible Sansui BA-5000 power amplifier I repaired last year. - [Incredible Technics SE-A100 Amplifier Resurrection](https://liquidaudio.com.au/technics-se-a100-amplifier-resurrection/): Actually, I need a drink after the two days' work this article has taken to put together! That's right, folks, I'm following up on my 2021 teaser about repairing this absolute beast and my promise to write what I knew would be a hefty Technics SE-A100 resurrection article. Hey, it's only taken me five years, but we are finally doing this epic story! - [Gorgeous Kenwood KP-990 Turntable Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/gorgeous-kenwood-kp-990-turntable-service/): The Kenwood KP-990, also known as the Kenwood KD-990 in many markets, is almost the last serious turntable Kenwood made. This is sad, but a reflection of the arrival of CD, which, for many, spelled the end of vinyl. It ultimately wasn't, of course, but it certainly was for a while. Anyway, Kenwood did a great job with the KP-990 / KD-990, so today we are going to dig into it a little. Welcome back, everyone. - [Beautiful Sony PS-22 Turntable Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/beautiful-sony-ps-22-turntable-repair/): You've got Liquid Mike in low power mode today, but that won't stop me from writing an article about this lovely Sony PS-22 direct drive turntable I've just repaired. I'm a few kg and some energy and cash lighter than this time last week, recovering from the worst gastroenteritis I can recall. I'm going to lose more workshop time, unfortunately, but let's see if I can at least write this article today. - [Lovely Denon DP-30L Turntable Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/lovely-denon-dp-30l-turntable-service/): Welcome back, everyone, as we take a brief and probably overdue look at another of my favourite turntables, the venerable Denon DP-30L. I last wrote about the Denon DP-30L back in 2017 in a service and repair article, and I've reviewed this lovely deck back in the same year. - [Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated Amplifier Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/musical-fidelity-a5-integrated-amplifier-repair/): The Musical Fidelity A5 integrated is what I see as something of a transition product for MF. This is a decent piece of gear, but the quality had dropped a little by this time, and it is let down, as other MF gear is, by poor component quality and cost-saving measures. - [Epic Accuphase DP-77 SACD Player Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/accuphase-dp-77-sacd-player-repair/): Welcome back, everyone! In the interests of maintaining a little variety for you, this time I bring you something digital, a stunning Accuphase DP-77 SACD player, from 2002. - [Stunning Rare Yamaha PX-3 Turntable Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/stunning-rare-yamaha-px-3-turntable-service/): The Yamaha PX-3 turntable is certainly rare, at least here in Australia. It's also absolutely beautiful and in the same ilk design-wise as the equally lovely Pioneer PL-L1000, the gorgeous Technics SL-M3 and even the baby Technics SL-10. I've written about all of these, and more, previously. - [Timeless Thorens TD 150 MK II Overhaul](https://liquidaudio.com.au/timeless-thorens-td-150-mk-ii-overhaul/): This one is actually a family affair. This Thorens TD 150 MK II belongs to my brother-in-law, Stewart. Stew inherited it after his brother, Pete, passed away, far too young, about a year ago. Rest in peace, Pete. This gorgeous and very cool Thorens TD 150 carries Pete's personality and love of vinyl with it. She desperately needed some TLC, though, so Stew asked me if I could bring her back to life. You can anticipate my answer, so let's take a look at that process in another overdue turntable article. - [Gorgeous Denon DP-1200 Turntable Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/gorgeous-denon-dp-1200-turntable-service/): I stay in my lane of course, and steer clear of 50s and 60s Garrard and record changers, and the older decks from before 1970. I also don't do crazy rebuilds of kooky decks using thousands of dollars' worth of Swiss parts. Why not? Because my focus is on more modern turntables that perform even better. With that in mind, let's next look at another of my all-time favourite turntables, the Denon DP-1200 :-) - [Lovely Pioneer PL-11 Turntable Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/lovely-pioneer-pl-11-turntable-repair/): That's right, another article, it's madness here @ Liquid Audio! In the interests of bringing you equipment you may not have seen before, and not just high-end gear either, let's look at a beautiful turntable I've just finished bringing back to life, this gorgeous Pioneer PL-11 idler drive deck from around 1970. Hint: If you are looking for an affordable idler drive deck, this could be perfect. - [Beautiful Marantz 6300 Turntable Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/beautiful-marantz-6300-turntable-service/): Welcome back during one of my busiest times of the year. I hope you enjoy this article about the gorgeous Marantz 6300 direct drive turntable, surely one of the most beautiful turntables from the golden era of vinyl. My review of the Marantz 6300 has become one of the most popular articles on the site. If you'd like a little more info on the 6300, have a read of that. I wrote that nearly 10 years ago, though, so it's about time I wrote another article on this popular turntable. - [Astonishing Accuphase DP-90 CD Player Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/accuphase-dp-90-cd-player-repair/): Welcome back everyone, for variety we're talking about classic CD players again today, and this one is dear to my heart as I own one of these beauties - the incredible Accuphase DP-90 Precision Compact Disc Player, to use her correct title. - [Stunning NOS Sansui XR-Q7 Commission & Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/stunning-nos-sansui-xr-q7-commission-repair/): That's right, another new old stock Sansui turntable, can you believe it?! It's been almost 10 years since I wrote about unboxing and commissioning this incredible, new-old-stock Sansui SR-929 direct drive turntable. What better way to celebrate than to unbox and commission another NOS Sansui direct drive turntable - a beautiful Sansui XR-Q7, sitting in a box for over 40 years, direct from Japan. - [Amazing Kenwood R-5000 Shortwave Receiver!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/amazing-kenwood-r-5000-shortwave-receiver/): Do you love the idea of listening to old-school broadcasts from other countries over the radio waves rather than computers and the internet? Not hi-fi gear, I know, but kind of like hi-fi for radio, so in the interests of variety, here is another shortwave radio article for the generally electronically curious, about my newly acquired Kenwood R-5000 communications receiver. - [Baby Amplifiers: Sansui AU-101](https://liquidaudio.com.au/baby-amplifiers-sansui-au-101/): Do we love these babies? Yes, we do! Welcome back, everyone. That said, and so that I don't bore some of you to death, I'm going to cap it at four baby amplifiers articles for now, with more to come as needed. What better subject for article number four, though, than one of the most classic and archetypal baby amplifiers, the diminutive Sansui AU-101! - [Baby Amplifiers: Sony TA-1150](https://liquidaudio.com.au/baby-amplifiers-sony-ta-1150/): The Sony TA-1150 outputs 30 Watts per channel, and so is not a true baby like the others we've looked at. In terms of the listening experience, though, 20 Watts vs 30 Watts represents under 2dB difference and is therefore essentially inaudible. You need to double amplifier power to yield a 3dB increase in sound pressure level (SPL), considered a perceptible increase. For more on the relationship between power and SPL, read this. - [Baby Amplifiers: Marantz 1030](https://liquidaudio.com.au/baby-amplifiers-marantz-1030/): That's right, it's baby amplifier time again, and I've chosen another little gem, the Marantz 1030. Like the Kenwood KA-4002A I covered last week, the Marantz 1030 was the baby of the Marantz range at the time, but a beauty. This unit was kindly donated by a lovely gentleman whose name I've unfortunately forgotten, so if you are seeing this, please leave a comment. - [Baby Amplifiers: Kenwood KA-4002A](https://liquidaudio.com.au/baby-amplifiers-kenwood-ka-4002a/): With this in mind, and given that I work on a lot of these affordable pieces for people who genuinely enjoy them, I've decided to write articles about some of my favourite baby amplifiers, starting with the venerable Kenwood KA-4002A. I've written about others, like the gorgeous Naim Nait 15-Watt gem, previously. There will be more in this series over the next couple of months. - [Classic Moth RCM Record Cleaner Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/classic-moth-rcm-record-cleaner-repair/): Firstly, a big thank you to Francis, who kindly donated his dead Moth RCM record cleaner. Francis has followed my work for a while and knew how much I enjoyed saving things like this, so when his Moth RCM record cleaner died, he decided to donate it, in the hope that it could be resurrected and enjoyed again by someone else. I am pleased to say that I have indeed resurrected her! - [Superb Plinius M16 Preamplifier Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/superb-plinius-m16-preamplifier-repair/): It's fair to say that Plinius has carried that mantle further than Perreaux though, who started incredibly well with beasts like my reference PMF-5150B power amplifier, but dropped the ball in more recent years after the death of their creator. Plinius, has just kept making lovely hi-fi equipment and I've worked on and repaired many classic Plinius pieces over the years. This gorgeous Plinius M16 preamplifier is no exception. - [Another End-Game Kenwood L-07D Turntable!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/another-end-game-kenwood-l-07d-turntable/): Let's hope I can make this three from three because, amusingly, I reckon my customer has single-handedly doubled the number of L-07Ds in Australia. Legend, check out the other two I worked on last year! I own the unobtainable Kenwood L-07DII. - [Servicing a ‘Just Serviced’ Technics SL-10!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/servicing-a-just-serviced-technics-sl-10/): Well, that's one question owners of turntables like the Technics SL-10 must consider periodically, say every five years or so. It's a question worth considering too, because 'service' clearly means quite different things to different people. The differences can make or quite literally break a piece like this. - [Celebrating 2000 Subscribers!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/celebrating-2000-subscribers/): It varies slightly from day to day, but today, 30 March 2025, is the first time I've hit 2000 subscribers to liquidaudio.com.au, so I figured: let's call it! - [Beautiful Pioneer PL-L1000 Linear Tracking Turntable Repair & Review](https://liquidaudio.com.au/pioneer-pl-l1000-turntable-repair-review/): This Pioneer PL-L1000 turntable repair and article are dedicated to my lovely customer, Brian, who recently suffered a devastating family loss. I won't go into details here as it's not my place to do so, but I'd ask that we all send Brian and his wife and family solidarity, love and best wishes. You are also welcome to leave Brian a comment below. I know he will see and appreciate them! - [Museum-Grade JBL 4344 Speaker Unboxing!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/museum-grade-jbl-4344-speaker-unboxing/): I/we concluded that a pair of the JBL studio or home speakers would be perfect and the incredible JBL 4344 studio monitors seemed ideal. These epic monitors were used mostly in recording studios to monitor the sound being recorded by artists in studios. - [Want to Know More About These..?!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/want-to-know-more-about-these/): Just a little teaser, but I'm writing it as we speak... - [Perth Gets HOT!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/perth-gets-hot/): Whilst I've been open for business and working hard since 14 January, I will definitely not be in my workshop today. Perth gets hot during summer. How hot..? Well, for my international visitors especially, how about 34 degrees C or 93 degrees F at 9 in the morning?! - [2024 Recap, Merry Christmas & Happy Holiday!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/2024-recap-merry-christmas-happy-holiday/): Can you believe it's Christmas again? I don't know where the time goes but welcome again to my end-of-year 2024 recap. A massive thank you to all who've helped make 2024 another fantastic year and my busiest yet. Here's hoping the holiday season is happy and healthy for all. - [Stunning Nakamichi 670ZX Cassette Deck Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/nakamichi-670zx-cassette-deck-repair/): The stand-out point to mention here is that this work took place over six years. That's right, six bloody years! This is absolutely ridiculous and only acceptable because it happens to be MY Nakamichi 670ZX, part of a collection that includes the incredible Pioneer CT-F1250 I repaired recently and my gorgeous Pioneer CT-A9X. Welcome back and season's greetings! - [Accuphase Booking Overload!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/accuphase-booking-overload/): Soon to arrive will be an Accuphase DP-77 SACD player, A-65 and A-60 class A power amplifiers. I seriously need a holiday, to Hawaii or the Maldives... - [Pristine JRC NRD-525 Communications Receiver](https://liquidaudio.com.au/pristine-jrc-nrd-525-communications-receiver/): I think variety is important, and I've been wiped out for over a week with the flu, so forgive me as we look at something a bit different today. It's still beautiful, well-made, produces sound and is electronic, but this one is related to another passion of mine. Check out this stunning almost new-in-box JRC NRD-525 communications receiver I recently purchased from Japan! - [Rare Mitsubishi DA-P10 / DA-A10 Pre/Power Resurrection](https://liquidaudio.com.au/mitsubishi-da-p10-da-a10-pre-power-resurrection/): Readers might not know that Mitsubishi made hi-fi gear, not just cars and industrial equipment. In Japan they traded under a hi-fi specific brand you may have heard of - Diatone, and produced some crazy good speakers for example, like the Diatone DS-5000, and many others. - [Amazing Pioneer CT-F1250 Cassette Deck Overhaul](https://liquidaudio.com.au/pioneer-ct-f1250-cassette-deck-repair/): I have a deep fondness for Pioneer cassette decks from this era, so when a customer told me he was going to donate his dead Pioneer CT-F1250 3-head direct drive deck to me, the only proviso being that I had to collect it and fix it of course, I couldn't pass the opportunity up. - [End-Game Accuphase C-280V Preamplifier Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/end-game-accuphase-c-280v-preamplifier-service/): I also delve into my long relationship with Accuphase as a brand and, oh yeah, this stunning end-game preamplifier, MY Accuphase C-280V, is also for sale, details later! - [Stunning One-Owner Kenwood KD-500 Turntable For Sale!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/stunning-one-owner-kenwood-kd-500-turntable-for-sale/): This stunning one-owner Kenwood KD-500 direct drive turntable comes complete with its as-purchased SME-3009 tonearm and the mega-bonus: a rare Fidelity Research FR-101 moving magnet cartridge! - [Fabled Sansui AU-20000 Amplifier Resurrection](https://liquidaudio.com.au/fabled-sansui-au-20000-amplifier-resurrection/): Welcome back, folks, and my apologies for taking so long to write a proper article about the Sansui AU-20000. I've worked on a few of these incredible amplifiers over the years, INCLUDING one I co-own with the Speaker Doctor! Time to rectify that. Also, time to fix my AU-20000, but that will have to wait a little longer... - [Incredible $10 Accuphase E-303 Tip Find..?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/incredible-accuphase-e-303-tip-find/): Chris contacted me, effusing about something he needed to show me, something he'd "just found". He popped over to my workshop with the pristine, and I mean perfect, almost unused Accuphase E-303 you are about to see, one of my favourite integrated amplifiers and a model we'd discussed and I'd recommended. - [Legendary Krell KSA 100 Class A Power Amplifier Restoration](https://liquidaudio.com.au/krell-ksa-100-power-amplifier-restoration/): Welcome back folks, it's Monday and that means it's both my day off and article time, darn it! Anyway, this time it's another amplifier restoration. We're heading to a similar time in the 1980s, but with a different manufacturer, Krell, and to the OG myth, the legend, the Krell KSA 100 class A power amplifier! - [Classic OG Marantz CD-73 CD Player Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/classic-og-marantz-cd-73-cd-player-service/): The gorgeous Marantz CD-73 is one of the OGs of the CD player world and her owner tells me she was the very first CD player to arrive in Western Australia, making her perhaps the ultimate OG machine here in Perth. That said, Kim, another customer and owner of West Coast HiFi Joondalup and the two beautiful Sony CDP-101s I serviced/repaired in 2022 will disagree. ## Pages - [Supportive Legends](https://liquidaudio.com.au/supportive-legends/): The legends in the list below have all gone above and beyond by making equipment or financial donations to support Liquid Audio. Customers can support us by asking us to supply and fit parts we've recommended. Most would much rather learn about bodgy builders, dodgy doctors and maladroit mechanics before they damage or ruin things we own and love. This simple premise, combined with my passion for excellence, led me to create my Hall of Shame. * - [Feedback](https://liquidaudio.com.au/feedback/): I'm thrilled to present this collection of positive feedback we've received from customers over the past decade. This page has information about how to book equipment, our business details, current booking status and our enquiry form, which is the best way to contact us. - [FAQs](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faqs/): Our frequently asked questions or FAQs answer more than 150 questions I'm commonly asked about amplifiers, turntables, vintage vs modern equipment, equipment service and repair, Liquid Audio and more. ## FAQs - [Why don’t you offer a packing and shipping service?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-dont-you-offer-a-packing-and-shipping-service/): I recently sold a piece of equipment and asked the customer for $150 to cover packing and shipping from Perth to Sydney, explaining that if it were more, I'd let them know and they would need to make up the difference. The quote from Pack and Send was $231, for packing and shipping. - [Do you keep old cartridges and headshells?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/do-you-have-old-cartridges-and-headshells/): Remember, Liquid Audio started with a turntable focus - 15 years ago, and I've worked on thousands of turntables since! As you can probably imagine, I've accumulated a stack of classic carrtidges, headshells and other bits and pieces which I diligently save, just in case they are needed later. - [How does your warranty work?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-does-your-warranty-work/): Our work and any parts we supply and install are covered by an industry-standard three-month warranty. This means that if any of those parts fail, or if any of the work done is somehow deficient, we will rectify the issue at our cost. You just need to let us know and return the equipment to us within 3 months. - [Can you explain the trust and respect people have for Liquid Audio?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-the-trust-and-respect-for-liquid-audio/): There are many talented electronics repairers, but many more very ordinary repairers. There are very few who enjoy wide trust and respect. Liquid Audio offers a combination of elements that's unusual and effective, driving our success with equipment we specialise in. - [What amplifiers have you owned?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-amplifiers-have-you-owned/): If I remember others, I'll add them. This is a useful exercise for me overall, so I'll do it for all the gear I've owned, in the main categories, eventually. - [Is it worth repairing my Krell KSA-250, etc?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-it-worth-repairing-my-krell-ksa-250/): This FAQ is in relation to a question I received from a gentleman in the USA with a broken Krell KSA-250. I strongly encouraged him to ship the amplifier to a local specialist repairer familiar with these complex beasts, as I do all such enquiries. The enquirer/owner said, "Shipping would be more than the amp", but I can't think of a situation where intra-USA shipping would come even close to what this amplifier is worth. - [What cartridges have you owned?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-cartridges-have-you-owned/): In chronological order, then, from oldest to most recent, let's look at the cartridges I've owned over the years that I can remember. Note that some of them are discussed in more detail in my cartridge inspection and cleaning article. - [How do I book equipment with you?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-do-i-book-equipment-with-you/): Demand for bookings with Liquid Audio consistently exceeds capacity. Regretably, it’s not viable to maintain a waitlist, so our how-to-book process is the best way to manage things. Get in touch if you have questions. - [Is the Denon DL-110 cartridge a good match for the Grace G-707 tonearm?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-the-denon-dl-110-cartridge-a-good-match-for-the-grace-g-707-tonearm/): The Denon DL-110 is a high-output (yuck), medium-compliance cart. It needs a medium-mass arm to load the suspension and ensure that the resonant frequency falls within the standard 8 - 12Hz range. The Grace G-707 is a low-mass arm, one of the lowest ever made at just 7 grams, similar to my SME 3009 Series III. As such, it is suited to high-compliance, softly sprung cartridges. - [What are your payment terms?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-are-your-payment-terms/): As a small business owner, I rely on prompt collection and payment for a range of reasons that I'm sure are obvious. Our account payment window is 7 days, noted on every invoice and in our terms and conditions. - [Is it normal for my turntable to make mechanical noise?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-it-normal-for-my-turntable-to-make-mechanical-noise/): This question came from a customer who'd just spent a small fortune (around 20K) on a very expensive new Luxman turntable and has been through three of them trying to find an acceptably quiet one. Can you believe that? No, neither could I. - [Why have many not heard of Accuphase?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-have-people-not-heard-of-accuphase/): Make no mistake: AVRs and home cinema receivers and even affordable modern hi-fi equipment are junk compared to serious high-end gear. No offence intended, just a statement of fact, but for this reason, your local hi-fi store not only doesn't sell Accuphase, but they also cannot sell it because they don't have access to it, nor can their customers afford it. - [How can I calculate tonearm resonance?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-can-i-calculate-tonearm-resonance/): This is done simply with maths, and the easiest way to make the calculations is via one of the great websites offering online calculators. My favourite is this tonearm resonance calculator. - [Why are you unwell?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-are-you-unwell/): I was rarely unwell until I got pneumonia back in 2018, leading to a golf-ball-sized pulmonary abscess (infection) that saw me briefly admitted to hospital. For about 24 hours, they thought it was something much worse, a crazy story in itself. Thankfully, it wasn't, but this put me on a 6-month outpatient program, with monthly X-rays and lung function check-ups. - [Can you help me match my cartridge, tonearm and step-up transformer?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/cartridge-tonearm-step-up-transformer/): Keep in mind that cartridge, tonearm and step-up transformer matching is a technical topic, with no one-size-fits-all answers. I will need to know exactly what equipment you are using, your budget and what you are hoping to achieve. - [What does “All work is billable” mean?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-does-all-work-is-billable-mean/): It's worth noting that our outcomes are consistently among the best in the industry, but not all equipment can be saved within a given budget or timeframe; some will not be viable to repair, and some I may refuse due to poor condition, or even a difficult customer. These scenarios don't invalidate any work done or necessary to achieve such understandings, however; hence, all work is billable. - [Can you alter my equipment condition report to make it more favourable?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-alter-my-equipment-condition-report/): Liquid Audio's inspection and equipment condition reports are objective assessments based on factual details and trusted Australia-wide for this very reason. Whilst receiving bad news may be disappointing, we report the facts truthfully, something anyone viewing our reports expects. - [Can you pay retail price for my equipment?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-pay-retail-prices-for-my-equipment/): I was recently asked: - [Are you leading a “conspiracy” against bad technicians?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/conspiracy-against-bad-technicians/): If there's one thing that irritates me, it's unprofessional, unskilled equipment damagers wailing about an imaginary conspiracy against them, rather than taking responsibility, accepting blame, and fixing the things that keep getting them into trouble. That would be an ethical and intelligent way to proceed. We don't see that with these people. - [Can Japanese-market FM tuners be used in Australia?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-japanese-market-fm-tuners-be-used-in-australia/): AM/FM tuners are still sought after for their high performance with high-quality analog FM stereo signals. In Australia, the FM broadcast band is 88 - 108 MHz, so any tuner you purchase needs to cover that same frequency band. Tuners from Europe and North America do, Japanese-market FM tuners do not. - [Can you provide me with an equipment valuation?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-give-me-an-equipment-valuation/): Equipment valuation is a specialised process involving a careful inspection and functional test of the equipment in the workshop, market research and determination of the equipment's value based on these and other factors, and 15+ years of experience, likely including multiple examples of your equipment! - [How important is customer loyalty to you?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-important-is-customer-loyalty/): See, loyalty, honesty and integrity are core values @ Liquid Audio and define the quality of service and support my customers receive. I put a lot of effort in, and I appreciate when some of that comes back. - [What are the most brutal dark metal tracks you’ve heard?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/most-brutal-dark-metal-tracks-youve-heard/): I'll add more as I think of them and feel free to tell me your faves because I want to know what they are! - [Can you tell my technician what parts to use?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-tell-my-technician-what-parts-to-use/): Read this FAQ for more about why, but here are the key reasons: - [Can I visit outside your business hours?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-i-visit-outside-your-business-hours/): I love my customers, but I keep regular business hours, and if you don't like random people appearing at your door out of hours and unexpectedly, please don't do it to me! This seems to be related to the fact that I work from home, though I have no idea why that would make an ounce of difference. Business hours are business hours, regardless of where we work. The key is respecting them. - [Why have you stopped writing upgrade articles?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-have-you-stopped-writing-upgrade-articles/): Upgrade articles take a ton of time and effort to generate, so I often include a prompt: - [What is the “only 50 hours” cartridge meme?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-is-the-only-50-hours-cartridge-meme/): The "only 50 hours" cartridge meme has been part of the hi-fi community for decades. Briefly, it's where someone selling a cartridge says it's had "only 50 hours of use", no matter how many hours it has, in an attempt to get a better sale price. - [Some considerations for non-local customers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/considerations-for-non-local-customers/): As a general rule, we don't take many bookings involving shipping, due to our busy local booking schedule. - [Mike, what’s the silliest thing anyone has said to you?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/the-silliest-thing-anyone-has-said-to-you/): If we restrict the silliest things to those related to running Liquid Audio, though, the silliest thing anyone ever said to me has to be when a customer accused me of stealing his old capacitors. - [What’s the deal with capacitors?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/whats-the-deal-with-capacitors/): To answer this we perhaps need to look first at what they do and how they are made. Capacitors store charge, like little reservoirs. They also block the flow of direct current and therefore DC voltages. Some are made of aluminium foil and are polarized, some of metalised plastic, some of ceramic materials or tantalum. - [Can you include more technical details in your articles?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-include-more-technical-details/): In other words, by providing critical technical details, readers get bored, competitors win, and I lose, and yet I'm the one doing the hard work! Also, keep in mind that most professional repairers don't create content at all, or didn't. There are over half a million words of unique free content here, with millions of views. I won't be messing with that successful formula 🙂 - [Why do you run a business from home?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-do-you-run-a-business-from-home/): We don't offer retail sales or deal with drop-in enquiries from the general public, so I don't need the added cost of a retail shopfront. Working from home suits me and my customers well, for many reasons. - [Does being a musician help with your work?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/does-being-a-musician-help/): Knowing what real instruments sound like is incredibly helpful when appraising hi-fi equipment and systems. Unlike many, I know what real drums, guitars, basses, keyboards and other instruments do sound like, and should sound like. I even still have my drum kit, though sadly I am not currently playing. - [Do CD transports sound different from one another?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/do-cd-transports-sound-different-from-one-another/): I've always known that CD transports sound different from one another, even if the reasons why are less obvious than they are with turntables for example. But, these sonic differences between CD transports have never been more apparent to me than when I changed my transport from my beloved Sony CDP-X7ESD to my recently acquired Accuphase DP-90. - [Why do you have these FAQs?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-do-you-have-these-faqs/): Honestly, there are questions I've probably been asked hundreds of times now over the last 10+ years. Answering commonly asked questions like these takes a chunk of time and, without a good alternative, I'd almost never get any work done! - [I’ve read that I should replace any capacitors measuring 10% under spec – is this correct?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/ive-read-that-i-should-replace-any-capacitors-measuring-10-under-spec-is-this-correct/): The Dunning-Kruger effect describes people overestimating their understanding of topics they know little about. This leads people to treat cancer with fruit juice, deny the moon landings, visit the Titanic in a home-made, cylindrical submarine and replace capacitors in equipment because someone they don't know or trust says it's a "good idea". All these things are silly and should be avoided. - [How much will my service or repair cost?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-much-will-my-service-or-repair-cost/): Liquid Audio has quietly become one of Australia's most trusted specialists, delivering class-leading professional service, results and value. Some of Perth’s best hi-fi retailers, Australia's best customers, and amazing manufacturers like Plinius rely on us. We'd love to assist you, too! - [Do you listen to every piece of equipment?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/mike-do-you-listen-to-everything/): When you run a business like mine, the reputation I've built based on care and attention to detail is no accident. Listening to every piece is an essential part of quality control and whilst some don't, I do. - [What are system resolution limitations and why are they important?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-are-system-resolution-limitations/): You might be thinking: "Mike, this is obvious!" Great, but as obvious as this concept might seem to you, I promise that most people are not good at auditing their systems properly or identifying and eliminating system resolution limitations (you don't know what you don't know, etc). - [Can you contact me when you are accepting new bookings or put me on a waitlist?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-put-me-on-a-waitlist/): Actually, it does, because this process helps me, which therefore helps all my customers. It works well for most, but for those who 'expect' a waitlist anyway, I apologise for being unable to offer one. Feel free to send an enquiry even if we're full, because it gets the ball rolling and may help clarify whether a job is something we cater for, and when to call us again. - [What motorcycles have you owned?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/mike-what-motorcycles-have-you-owned/): A few of my customers ride motorcycles and this question always comes up, so here they are, in chronological order, with my rough year of ownership noted: - [Why don’t you like working on equipment others have worked on?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-dont-you-like-working-on-equipment-others-have-worked-on/): In a nutshell, I don't enjoy cleaning up messes created by others, hospital handpasses, as they are called in footy. The best scenario is hi-fi equipment that is unmolested, perhaps dirty or even broken, but in otherwise good, original condition. I am always happy to work on pieces that skilled technicians have worked on, but sadly, they are few and far between. - [Should I send my equipment overseas instead of to a reputable local repairer?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/should-i-send-my-equipment-overseas/): A gentleman contacted me recently, annoyed that he couldn't get his equipment in for immediate attention. He went on to tell me that he would no longer support local businesses and that he would instead send his equipment away for service. OK. - [Can you fast-track my repair if I pay more?!](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-fast-track-my-repair/): I've been asked this a few times, with the imputation that these people would like to push their way to the front of my customer queue. I can must assume it's worked before for these people, but I don't run my business that way. - [Is it safe to buy hi-fi equipment on Gumtree?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-it-safe-to-buy-hi-fi-equipment-on-gumtree/): You need to be careful when buying anything like expensive equipment on Gumtree, a local classifieds selling platform here in Australia. Did you know sellers can circumvent the buyer protection that normally exists when you use PayPal?  - [Should I work on my own equipment?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/should-i-work-on-my-own-equipment/): Working on your own equipment can be very rewarding and can save money and enhance the ownership experience. For some, basic maintenance may be quite straightforward and yet for others, the results can be disastrous, so as always, pick your battles! - [Why does hi-fi equipment require specialist repairers?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-hifi-equipment-specialist-repairers/): Hi-fi equipment contains unique components and mechanical designs. A unique set of knowledge and skills accompanies working on this type of gear. General electronics repairers, musical instrument techs and whitegoods repair guys do not have the requisite knowledge, skills and tools to expediently and expertly repair this gear. - [What are intermittent faults, and why are they a problem?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-are-intermittent-faults/): Intermittent faults can be difficult to find and fix, because: - [How do I choose a better amplifier?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-do-i-choose-a-better-amplifier/): The level of Integration refers to how many functions and, therefore, compromises are crammed into one box. To improve performance, one should aim to minimise the level of integration. Ranked from the most highly integrated (worst) to the least integrated (best) equipment types, with their performance potential, we have: - [Mike, what do you think of affordable, modern phono preamplifiers?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/mike-what-do-you-think-of-modern-affordable-phono-preamplifiers/): You first need to understand that I've been spoiled by great phono preamps made when vinyl was at its peak. Much of the excellent equipment from that era is unsurpassed in terms of build, technical specifications and sonic performance. Cheaper, modern gear simply cannot hold a candle to it, despite all the hype and often impressive on-paper specs. ## Categories - [Amplifiers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/amplifiers/) - [Cassette Decks](https://liquidaudio.com.au/cassette-decks/) - [CD Players & DACs](https://liquidaudio.com.au/cd-players-dacs/) - [DIY](https://liquidaudio.com.au/diy/) - [For Sale](https://liquidaudio.com.au/for-sale/) - [Preamplifiers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/preamplifiers/) - [Quickies](https://liquidaudio.com.au/quickies/) - [Rants](https://liquidaudio.com.au/rants/) - [Receivers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/receivers/) - [Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/repair/) - [Restoration & Overhaul](https://liquidaudio.com.au/restoration/) - [Reviews](https://liquidaudio.com.au/reviews/) - [Service](https://liquidaudio.com.au/service/) - [Speakers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/speakers/) - [Tuners & Radios](https://liquidaudio.com.au/tuners-radios/) - [Turntables & Vinyl](https://liquidaudio.com.au/turntables-vinyl/) - [Updates](https://liquidaudio.com.au/updates/) - [Upgrades](https://liquidaudio.com.au/upgrades/) - [Videos](https://liquidaudio.com.au/videos/) ## FAQ Groups - [Amplifiers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=amplifiers) - [Cassette Decks](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=cassette-decks) - [CD Players](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=cd-players) - [General Hi-Fi](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=general-hi-fi) - [Liquid Audio](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=liquid-audio) - [Service & Repair](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=service-repair) - [Speakers](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=speakers) - [Tuners & Radios](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=tuners-radios) - [Turntables & Vinyl](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=turntables-vinyl) - [Vintage vs Modern](https://liquidaudio.com.au/?faq-group=vintage-vs-modern)
