- [Baby Amplifiers: Sony TA-1150](https://liquidaudio.com.au/baby-amplifiers-sony-ta-1150/): The Sony TA-1150 outputs 30 Watts per channel, and so is not a true baby like the others we've looked at. In terms of the listening experience, though, 20 Watts vs 30 Watts represents under 2dB difference and is therefore essentially inaudible. You need to double amplifier power to yield a 3dB increase in sound pressure level (SPL), considered a perceptible increase. For more on the relationship between power and SPL, read this.

- [Why don’t you offer a packing and shipping service?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-dont-you-offer-a-packing-and-shipping-service/): I recently sold a piece of equipment and asked the customer for $150 to cover packing and shipping from Perth to Sydney, explaining that if it were more, I'd let them know and they would need to make up the difference. The quote from Pack and Send was $231, for packing and shipping.
- [Do you keep old cartridges and headshells?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/do-you-have-old-cartridges-and-headshells/): Remember, Liquid Audio started with a turntable focus - 15 years ago, and I've worked on thousands of turntables since! As you can probably imagine, I've accumulated a stack of classic carrtidges, headshells and other bits and pieces which I diligently save, just in case they are needed later.
- [How does your warranty work?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-does-your-warranty-work/): Our work and any parts we supply and install are covered by an industry-standard three-month warranty. This means that if any of those parts fail, or if any of the work done is somehow deficient, we will rectify the issue at our cost. You just need to let us know and return the equipment to us within 3 months.

- [Is it worth repairing my Krell KSA-250, etc?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-it-worth-repairing-my-krell-ksa-250/): This FAQ is in relation to a question I received from a gentleman in the USA with a broken Krell KSA-250. I strongly encouraged him to ship the amplifier to a local specialist repairer familiar with these complex beasts, as I do all such enquiries. The enquirer/owner said, "Shipping would be more than the amp", but I can't think of a situation where intra-USA shipping would come even close to what this amplifier is worth.

Note that some of them are discussed in more detail in my cartridge inspection and cleaning article.
- [How do I book equipment with you?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-do-i-book-equipment-with-you/): Demand for bookings with Liquid Audio consistently exceeds capacity. Regretably, it’s not viable to maintain a waitlist, so our how-to-book process is the best way to manage things. Get in touch if you have questions.
- [Is the Denon DL-110 cartridge a good match for the Grace G-707 tonearm?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-the-denon-dl-110-cartridge-a-good-match-for-the-grace-g-707-tonearm/): The Denon DL-110 is a high-output (yuck), medium-compliance cart. It needs a medium-mass arm to load the suspension and ensure that the resonant frequency falls within the standard 8 - 12Hz range. The Grace G-707 is a low-mass arm, one of the lowest ever made at just 7 grams, similar to my SME 3009 Series III. As such, it is suited to high-compliance, softly sprung cartridges.
- [What are your payment terms?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-are-your-payment-terms/): As a small business owner, I rely on prompt collection and payment for a range of reasons that I'm sure are obvious. Our account payment window is 7 days, noted on every invoice and in our terms and conditions.
- [Is it normal for my turntable to make mechanical noise?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/is-it-normal-for-my-turntable-to-make-mechanical-noise/): This question came from a customer who'd just spent a small fortune (around 20K) on a very expensive new Luxman turntable and has been through three of them trying to find an acceptably quiet one. Can you believe that? No, neither could I.
- [Why have many not heard of Accuphase?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-have-people-not-heard-of-accuphase/): Make no mistake: AVRs and home cinema receivers and even affordable modern hi-fi equipment are junk compared to serious high-end gear. No offence intended, just a statement of fact, but for this reason, your local hi-fi store not only doesn't sell Accuphase, but they also cannot sell it because they don't have access to it, nor can their customers afford it.
- [How can I calculate tonearm resonance?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/how-can-i-calculate-tonearm-resonance/): This is done simply with maths, and the easiest way to make the calculations is via one of the great websites offering online calculators. My favourite is this tonearm resonance calculator.
- [Why are you unwell?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-are-you-unwell/): I was rarely unwell until I got pneumonia back in 2018, leading to a golf-ball-sized pulmonary abscess (infection) that saw me briefly admitted to hospital. For about 24 hours, they thought it was something much worse, a crazy story in itself. Thankfully, it wasn't, but this put me on a 6-month outpatient program, with monthly X-rays and lung function check-ups.
- [Can you help me match my cartridge, tonearm and step-up transformer?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/cartridge-tonearm-step-up-transformer/): Keep in mind that cartridge, tonearm and step-up transformer matching is a technical topic, with no one-size-fits-all answers. I will need to know exactly what equipment you are using, your budget and what you are hoping to achieve.
- [What does “All work is billable” mean?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/what-does-all-work-is-billable-mean/): It's worth noting that our outcomes are consistently among the best in the industry, but not all equipment can be saved within a given budget or timeframe; some will not be viable to repair, and some I may refuse due to poor condition, or even a difficult customer. These scenarios don't invalidate any work done or necessary to achieve such understandings, however; hence, all work is billable.
- [Can you alter my equipment condition report to make it more favourable?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-alter-my-equipment-condition-report/): Liquid Audio's inspection and equipment condition reports are objective assessments based on factual details and trusted Australia-wide for this very reason. Whilst receiving bad news may be disappointing, we report the facts truthfully, something anyone viewing our reports expects.

- [Are you leading a “conspiracy” against bad technicians?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/conspiracy-against-bad-technicians/): If there's one thing that irritates me, it's unprofessional, unskilled equipment damagers wailing about an imaginary conspiracy against them, rather than taking responsibility, accepting blame, and fixing the things that keep getting them into trouble. That would be an ethical and intelligent way to proceed. We don't see that with these people.
- [Can Japanese-market FM tuners be used in Australia?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-japanese-market-fm-tuners-be-used-in-australia/): AM/FM tuners are still sought after for their high performance with high-quality analog FM stereo signals. In Australia, the FM broadcast band is 88 - 108 MHz, so any tuner you purchase needs to cover that same frequency band. Tuners from Europe and North America do, Japanese-market FM tuners do not.
- [Can you provide me with an equipment valuation?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-give-me-an-equipment-valuation/): Equipment valuation is a specialised process involving a careful inspection and functional test of the equipment in the workshop, market research and determination of the equipment's value based on these and other factors, and 15+ years of experience, likely including multiple examples of your equipment!

- [What’s the deal with capacitors?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/whats-the-deal-with-capacitors/): To answer this we perhaps need to look first at what they do and how they are made. Capacitors store charge, like little reservoirs. They also block the flow of direct current and therefore DC voltages. Some are made of aluminium foil and are polarized, some of metalised plastic, some of ceramic materials or tantalum.
- [Can you include more technical details in your articles?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/can-you-include-more-technical-details/): In other words, by providing critical technical details, readers get bored, competitors win, and I lose, and yet I'm the one doing the hard work! Also, keep in mind that most professional repairers don't create content at all, or didn't. There are over half a million words of unique free content here, with millions of views. I won't be messing with that successful formula 🙂
- [Why do you run a business from home?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/why-do-you-run-a-business-from-home/): We don't offer retail sales or deal with drop-in enquiries from the general public, so I don't need the added cost of a retail shopfront. Working from home suits me and my customers well, for many reasons.
- [Does being a musician help with your work?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/does-being-a-musician-help/): Knowing what real instruments sound like is incredibly helpful when appraising hi-fi equipment and systems. Unlike many, I know what real drums, guitars, basses, keyboards and other instruments do sound like, and should sound like. I even still have my drum kit, though sadly I am not currently playing.
- [Do CD transports sound different from one another?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/do-cd-transports-sound-different-from-one-another/): I've always known that CD transports sound different from one another, even if the reasons why are less obvious than they are with turntables for example. But, these sonic differences between CD transports have never been more apparent to me than when I changed my transport from my beloved Sony CDP-X7ESD to my recently acquired Accuphase DP-90.

Answering commonly asked questions like these takes a chunk of time and, without a good alternative, I'd almost never get any work done!
- [I’ve read that I should replace any capacitors measuring 10% under spec – is this correct?](https://liquidaudio.com.au/faq/ive-read-that-i-should-replace-any-capacitors-measuring-10-under-spec-is-this-correct/): The Dunning-Kruger effect describes people overestimating their understanding of topics they know little about. This leads people to treat cancer with fruit juice, deny the moon landings, visit the Titanic in a home-made, cylindrical submarine and replace capacitors in equipment because someone they don't know or trust says it's a "good idea". All these things are silly and should be avoided.

He went on to tell me that he would no longer support local businesses and that he would instead send his equipment away for service. OK.
