Can you provide me with a service manual?

No, this is not a service we offer.

Many older service manuals are available online, and you don’t need my help to obtain them. Much of my service data, however, comes directly from manufacturers, distributors and other specialist sources and is otherwise unobtainable.

In-Confidence

Service data is intended for technicians and is provided in confidence under the strict understanding that it will not be shared. Put simply, I am not permitted to share service data, manuals, schematics, etc, and I am legally obliged to honour the usage agreements I have with manufacturers and distributors.

No respected professional technician would risk these arrangements, so expecting me to, as Stephan from Germany did, is foolish and earned him a spot here. That’s because when I politely explained that I could not provide data he felt entitled to, he spat the dummy:

Thanks for nothing.

Stephan

What Stephan meant to say is: “Thank you for all the articles, including the one that helped me repair my Krell amplifier. I understand that you don’t need to publish anything about such repair work and that you are a man of your word and therefore cannot share confidential service data!” 😉

Proprietary Solutions

The other aspect to this involves reverse engineering and proprietary solutions. Sometimes, service data is not available. In these cases, we must derive the data by examining the engineering. This is straightforward in most cases if one understands what data is needed and how to derive it. This also becomes proprietary at this point, however.
