Legendary Perreaux PMF-5150B power amplifier!

Finally, I’m listing it, one of my previous reference power amplifiers, the legendary and sublime Perreaux PMF-5150B power amplifier! More about this iconic amplifier and company, here.

UPDATE: Sold!

This amplifier took over from my Krell KSA-150, and was succeeded by my Accuphase P-360, and then my Accuphase A-75. As you can imagine, I can’t justify keeping pieces like this given the value tied up in them, so they have to go, and sadly, so it is with the PMF-5150B.

This example is about as clean as they come.

Perreaux PMF-5150B

Not much needs to be said about this beast that hasn’t already been said. Five hundred Watts per channel into 8 Ohms, legendary Hitachi MOSFET output devices that allow for an incredibly simple yet robust circuit design, and huge dual diode bridges. I’ve owned and loved this monster for 7 or 8 years.

Perreaux PMF-5150B

I have, of course, overhauled and serviced this old girl, fitting new high-spec small electrolytic capacitors and an uprated WIMA input coupling capacitor.

Perreaux PMF-5150B

Like so many of these old amplifiers, the power switch failed many years before I bought her, and they are no longer available. For this reason, she is hardwired on, you simply turn her on and off at the wall.

Perreaux PMF-5150B
Now that is how you build a power amplifier! This is one of many PMF-5150Bs I’ve repaired. Mine looks identical.
Perreaux PMF-5150B
Another PMF-5150B I’ve improved. This, my friends, is what you call a power supply – eight giant filter caps linked by a solid copper buss bar! Note the legendary 2SJ56 / 2SK176 output devices. Again, mine looks like this, apart from the soft start option visible at the bottom of the image.
Perreaux PMF-5150B
And these other images, including this one, are my amplifier.

In terms of sonics, I can only say that looks belie how she sounds. The PMF-5150B sounds lush, warm, airy and with almost unlimited bass and punch that you might expect from 500 W. What you may not know, however, is that these are biased in such a way that they produce about 30 Watts per channel in class A. MOSFETs and class A account for the velvety sound these produce.

I’ve worked on and repaired many of these and their smaller relatives over the years, and thoroughly enjoy working on them. They are built like nothing else from this time, a true thing of joy!

This lovely, overhauled and serviced Perreaux PMF-5150B can be yours for $3295. Local shoppers are preferred, as shipping anywhere in Australia will cost at least $500 due to the size and weight of this monster!

Sansui 661

The Sansui 661 is a very nice receiver from the early 1970s, beautifully made as equipment was back then. She boasts a modest 20 Watts/channel, so this unit will suit smaller and more sensitive speakers, smaller rooms, or fairly relaxed listening requirements. Used as such, she sounds rich, warm and punchy.
